Hi all-
I am forwarding this to the group from Amy Calmann of the NYC Pit Bull Group. There will be a protest on July 23rd at 6pm in Washington Square Park against Breed Specific Bans in NYC and the ban imposed by the NYC Housing Authority of dogs weighing over 25 pounds including Rottweillers, Doberman Pinshcers, Pit Bulls, and many others which are now prohibited in housing controlled by the NYC Housing Authority.
Even if you don't have a pitbull or one of the other breeds, please consider attending this event in support of all of those who do.

I'm Amy Calmann and I organize the NYC Pit Bull Group. Here is our site..
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-Pitbull/

I have planned, along with two other people, a BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) protest to take place on
Thursday July 23rd at 6:00pm in Washington Square Park. We will meet at the arch (the north side) of the park. Many people from the group have already pledged their attendance, along with several rescue groups, and we have been networking like crazy to get lots of others involved. We also have people and rescue
groups coming in from out of state - NJ, CT, PA, RI, etc. But we literally need HUNDREDS of people at the protest, to make a difference and to receive recognition.

I am hopeful that some of your meetup members may be able to make it to the event.

The protest will revolve around the BSL laws that New York Housing Authority enforced upon pit bulls (and dobermans, rottweilers and tons of other breeds) just last month. As I'm sure you are aware, many elderly people in city-regulated housing are now in jeopardy of losing their pets because of this law, and I've received heartbreaking letters from people asking for help. In addition, we are using an example of one
particular pit bull Bruce, from Northern Ireland, who has been on death row for nearly two years, while the court decides if he should live or die. Bruce's fate will be decided within weeks, or possibly days. He will be our "poster-child" for the protest. You may already be aware of Bruce's plight. But just
in case, here is Bruce's story... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRJYVszJ7tE

And we are hoping to make New York aware that we will not stand for any BSL in our city.
Unfortunately, the idea of BSL in New York City has come closer to a reality, ever since the New York Housing Authority was able to enact their new law. Miami, Detroit, Denver, and many other cities already have BSL laws in place. We need to make sure that New York knows that we will not stand for any BSL ordinance here. And we need to show the world that BSL will not be tolerated in any city, anywhere.

You've seen it on Animal Planet and ESPN...teach your dog to crawl through tunnels, walk across a see-saw, jump through hoops, leap over hurdles and more! Agility strengthens the bond between you and your dog, teaches you and your dog to work as a team and is a great way for you and your dog to have a blast!

The next round of Agility Classes in NYC at Animal Haven's 2,500 square foot training center in Soho (251 Centre Street) starts Thursday, June 18th. To register contact us at info@AndreaArden.com or 212-414-9597.

Classes are divided as follows:
6:00pm to 7:00pm Advanced Beginner
7:00pm to 8:00pm Beginner Agility & Manners
8:00pm to 9:00pm Beginner Agility & Manners
9:00pm to 10:00pm Intermediate Agility

Beginner Level: Open to dogs of any age with no prior agility experience. This class will introduce the basics in obstacle performance, foundation jump training, target training, directionals and handling fundamentals. Obedience commands such as sit, down and stay will also be reviewed. This class should be repeated as often as necessary before moving on to the next level per instructor.

Advanced Beginner: Dog/handler teams must have completed Beginner Level I & II to join this class. Dogs should be comfortable on most equipment. This class will continue to build on the skills that were introduced in beginner agility and will focus on more handling techniques, sequencing and obstacle independence. Techniques on building a working relationship and stronger bond between dog and handler will also be covered.

Intermediate Level: Instructor approval required for participation in this class. Dog/handler teams need to be proficient on all obstacles including weave poles. Advanced level handling and complex sequences will be the focus of this class.
