We will be hiking at Bald Mountain State recreation area. Although the Metroparks and city owned parks are very nice, we like to take our dogs into state land for a few reasons. Those of you that trust your dogs off lead in a NON-FENCED area can let them run however we do recommend a very strong recall as this area is open to hunting. The trails we will be hiking are generally not used by hunters, and if hunters are present during this time of year I do not worry about my dogs. They are generally hunting with dogs of their own, or at least are receptive to dogs in the fields/woods due to the game season in effect.
The other reason is the variety of terrain-fields, woods and marsh areas all in the same general vicinity. We actually hold many of our events at Bald Mountain dependent on the hunting seasons. The terrain is also very natural-you will not find blacktop trails, portapotties or bathrooms, drinking fountains and cell phone reception is not great. At first that may not sound appealing to some of you, but the decrease in these things means an increase in the sights and sounds nature has to offer us.
The trail systems are broken up nicely as well, so we have alternative distances. If it is a beautiful day we can take the long road-and for those of you who do not want to go as far the trail is clearly marked back to the trailhead. We will also supply you with a map of the trail system and designate a guide to ensure you end up where you plan to.
